Commemorative evening – Memorial for Pete Kaplan

The Czech – American evening on Wednesday October 24th was dedicated to a memorial for the greatest Czech rock ’n’ roll player, Pete Kaplan, who recently passed away. It would be hard to imagine a commemorative evening for this great musician without his band Mefisto and around which whole evening was centered. Pete found his band in early sixties. All famous pieces were played from times when music like this was available to be heard underground under a close watch of secret police and former establishment. Someone said once, that invention of an electric guitar was one of the biggest blows to end the communist idiocy. When the band hit the strings, the old guys suddenly became young again and they perhaps played even better than in their early years. They just rocked the club to everyone’s enjoyment that night. Besides all combinations of past Mefisto’s formations, there were solo performances by Viktor Sodoma, Pavel Sedlacek and Josef Simak and performance by Apples band. Even some band players got to sing a solo performance and almost each time with support from the whole audience. The whole evening was reminder, that this music will not get lost and Pete will sure keep an eye on it up there, now that he got the draft card needlessly too soon.
